Hyde Updates Council On Repairs At Landfill Offices

Gary Wayne Hyde, Department Manager of the Lawrenceburg Sanitation Department, told city leaders Thursday that although it may take some time to complete necessary repairs and reconstruction at the landfill building, business will continue as usual throughout the process.

The offices on Baler Drive sustained heavy damage on January 10 when the brakes on a vehicle failed, causing the driver to crash into the building. The vehicle impacted a gas line, resulting in an explosion and fire.

Hyde expressed gratitude to members of the Lawrenceburg Police, Fire and Public Works Departments as well as Lawrenceburg Utility Systems for the professionalism and proficient manner with which the situation was handled. He said this allowed employees to have the operation “up and running” within twelve hours of the crash.

The cleanup process got underway Thursday. Hyde said that the repair and reconstruction phase will take several weeks. He told council members, “It will be rough on everybody for a while,” but added, “I’d like to say ‘thank God’ that nobody was hurt.” He said employees inside the building were within six feet of the point of impact and explosion, but that everyone got out safely.

Mayor Keith Durham concurred, saying, “We can replace buildings all day long but you can’t replace people.”
